Questions about PVC membrane waterproofing
A bitumen roll is a tar-based material fixed with heat or adhesive, while a flexible plastic membrane has its seams welded with heat or solvent. The plastic sheet handles expansion and contraction better, and its seams are welded rather than bonded, making it better suited to large flat roofs with high thermal movement.
The membrane itself does not let water through, but any gap in the seam between two rolls becomes a direct entry point for water under the whole layer. Heat-welding the seam fuses the two edges into one piece, which is what sets it apart from simply covering the joint with an adhesive.
A plastic membrane handles movement better than rigid coatings, but wide cracks in the base need treating before the sheet is laid. A good layer loses its purpose if the base is moving or crumbling beneath it, so the work always starts with assessing the condition of the roof.
It depends on the condition of the old layer. If it is sound and level it may serve as a base, but if it is peeling or blistering it must be removed first, because any blister under the new sheet becomes a weak point over time. Assessing the surface before deciding is the right step.
