How to Spot a Hidden Water Leak at Home

Published:

Simple signs and practical steps that show a hidden water leak before it turns into serious damage.

Water can leak inside a wall or under a floor for months before you see it. Learn the signs, and a simple check you can do yourself.

Why is it hard to find?

Pipes run inside walls, under floors and above ceilings. Water travels away from the leak, so the stain sometimes appears far from the source.

Where does a leak usually show up?

  • Under sinks and around the toilet.
  • Behind bathroom and kitchen walls.
  • Under tiled floors.
  • In the ceiling below bathrooms and rooftop tanks.
  • Around pipes that come out of the roof.

Signs of a hidden leak

  • A rise in your water bill that you cannot explain.
  • Damp patches or colour changes on the ceiling or walls.
  • Peeling or bubbling paint.
  • A musty smell in a closed room.
  • Lifted tiles or a swollen floor.
  • The sound of running water while every tap is closed.
  • Lower water pressure for no clear reason.

The water meter test

This test tells you whether there is a leak somewhere.

  1. Close all taps and switch off appliances that use water.
  2. Write down the water meter reading.
  3. Do not use water for an hour or two.
  4. Read the meter again. If the reading has changed, there is a leak.

The leak may be inside the building, or in the pipe that runs to it.

The toilet cistern test

Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, and do not flush. If the colour shows in the toilet bowl after a few minutes, the cistern is leaking.

What to do when you notice the signs

  • Close the main valve if water is leaking heavily.
  • Move furniture and electrical appliances away from the damp area.
  • Photograph the stains so you can follow how they change.
  • Do not paint over the stain before you know what causes the damp.

Also note what you saw: when the sign appeared, where, and whether it changes when you use water. This helps the specialist find the cause faster.

Do not break the wall to look for the leak

Random breaking damages your home, and it may not reach the leak at all.

A thermal camera and electronic detectors pinpoint the leak without breaking anything.

When to call a specialist

A small leak does not stop by itself. Constant water damages paint and floors and helps mould grow.

And do not rely on guessing, because the place of the stain may not show the place of the leak.

If you see one or more of these signs, or the meter moves while the taps are closed, do not delay the inspection. The longer you wait, the more damage is possible.

At Al Raya we locate the leak with instruments and without breaking anything, and we give you a certified report after inspection. Call us at any hour.
